Exsol lands JVC storage rights

Johannesburg, 08 Jul 1998

Exsol, a company in the MGX Holdings group, has secured the rights to distribute the JVC range of storage devices in South Africa. The principal products Exsol will market under the agreement are 200-platter and 600-platter optical jukeboxes, says Exsol sales director Grant O`Connor.

"The JVC distributorship was keenly contested," says O`Connor. "Our nationwide presence, through MGX, was a key factor in our securing the rights."

The 600-platter, six-drive jukebox is the largest on the market, adds O`Connor, with potential archiving capacity of around 384GB. Both jukeboxes are DVD-ready. This means as soon as DVD standards have been ratified, customers will be able to use both DVD and normal optical discs in the jukeboxes, pushing the potential capacity into multiple Terabytes.

"The jukeboxes will be sold directly and through dealers and will be targeted at organisations with significant archiving needs," says O`Connor. "They are ideal for organisations needing to store large amounts of video, audio or other forms of digital data."

Other key features, O`Connor says, include:

  • 8X player performance;
  • Tray-based disc loading;
  • CD mail slot; and
  • 50-disc interchangeable magazines.

"Each jukebox has a remote diagnostic system, which enables support via a wide-area network," adds O`Connor. "The units are housed in air-tight cabinets with internal air filtration systems to limit dust or particulate levels in the jukebox. Additional reliability features include MSBF of over 1 million cycles, guide-rail-system for precise CD changer positioning and a diagnostics mode for local or remote dial-up (RS232) access."

The jukeboxes neatly complement Exsol`s document imaging and workflow focus, says O`Connor, and extend the MGX group`s market leadership in document management.

Current pricing is in the R70 000 to R120 000 bracket, but this will vary depending on the configuration and exchange rate.
