Extended computing mobility becomes a reality

Johannesburg, 10 Apr 2003

With the release of Philips` DesXcape 150DM, monitors no longer belong to the PC but are now standalone input and display units. The 15-inch screen brings complete mobility to the wireless networked environment and offers access to all applications on the host PC from anywhere within a 100m radius.

"This detachable monitor, which can be used to access all PCs in a wireless network at home or in a small to medium-sized business, is a smart display device which not only offers access to applications available on host PCs but also delivers full Internet access," says Tyrone Young, marketing manager: monitors and LCD projectors at Philips SA. "When using it as a portable device, simply touching the appropriate icon on the screen will connect the user to the desired PC within the network."

The screen, with its built-in touch-panel, delivers the freedom to experience computing throughout the network environment and offers access to Web browsing, Internet facilities and e-mail. When housed in the base dock, a stylus can be used to input data using the touch-panel built into the screen.

The product can also be used in conjunction with a USB mouse or keyboard, which can be connected directly to it. It can also be used with a wireless keyboard.

Young believes the new product is superior to many of the notebook computers currently available in that it has a three to five hour battery life when fully charged which can be extended through the use of a high-capacity battery pack, an optional extra.

"The DesXcape 150DM turns on almost instantly and has no ambient noise and does not generate the heat usually associated with portable devices," he notes.

The DesXcape 150DM serves as a mobile computing device and/or desktop monitor. When plugged into a PC, via its dock base, it serves as an LCD monitor for the host PC and with a DVI-D interface its base station is ready to receive digital video signals from high-end computer graphic cards.
