Extreme Networks wins Infoworld`s 10 Gigabit network convergence shootout

Johannesburg, 02 Aug 2006

In a test of 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches, InfoWorld Magazine`s highly respected technical review team performed a hands-on comparative review of network solutions and recognised Extreme Networks, Inc`s BlackDiamond switches as the highest scoring enterprise convergence solution of participating vendors, as profiled in the 10 July story, "InfoWorld Test Centre`s 10-Gig switch-off".

The tests, performed by the InfoWorld review team at the Advanced Network Computing Lab (ANCL) at the University of Hawaii, were constructed to measure scalability, network management, security, set-up and overall value of leading Ethernet switches. The BlackDiamond 10808 core switch and BlackDiamond 8800 edge switches performed up to task.

Regarding the outcome of the testing, the editors commented:

* "Extreme machines took everything our Spirent TestCenters tossed at them with a smile. The fun stuff didn`t start until we began our optional testing. First, Extreme insisted on doing some fail-over testing, dropping network links in the midst of traffic transmissions with nary a bit escaping."
* "BlackDiamond (switches) can function in any high-performance switching environment, from the carrier-class situations to corporate data centres, and you`ll find specific optimising features for each."
* "Setting up an advanced switching topology in what amounts to a single day is a solid achievement for any platform but Extreme really nailed it. These products clicked together like well-oiled machines - so well that we were completely through our baseline testing on the very first day."

The primary goal of the testing methodology was to provide readers with the most recent information regarding how today`s 10 Gigabit LAN switching solutions have evolved to support the management of converged applications, including voice, video and data, on a production data network.

"While our competitors often avoid head-to-head product reviews, Extreme consistently demonstrates in real world tests how our solution advances the state-of-the-art in networking by increasing network availability with modular software, providing integrated and powerful management capabilities and scaling for thousands of users," said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice-president of marketing and product management for Extreme Networks, Inc.

"InfoWorld`s latest independent review of 10 Gigabit network convergence solutions has again revealed the superb value and performance of Extreme Networks` enterprise LAN switching platforms."

This latest recognition adds to Extreme Networks` extensive history of broad recognition from industry experts for its strategy and products:

* The BlackDiamond 10K switch was named InfoWorld`s "Technology Product of the Year" in 2004 and again in 2005.
* The BlackDiamond 10K switch and ExtremeXOS operating system was named Network Magazine`s "Most Visionary" product in 2005.
* The BlackDiamond 8800 switch was named TechWorld Magazine`s Network Award winner as "2005 Switch Product of the Year", recognised for its innovative design and features that allow for a resilient and highly available network supporting both data and voice applications.
* Extreme Networks named one of the Top 100 vendors in Information Technology by IT Week Magazine for 2006.
* Extreme Networks received the "2005 Product Line Strategy Award" for the Enterprise Switch Market from global growth consulting company Frost & Sullivan. The company was singled out for its strategy of partnering with other vendors who use open standards to allow customers to select the best products for their enterprise network.
