F-Secure Anti-Virus succeeds in the virus scanner test at Virus bulletin. New version found more viruses than any other product

Johannesburg, 19 Apr 2000

JSE-listed Y3K`s Information Division (Gas ) the sole distributor for F-Secure Corporation (previously known as Fellows Finland) in Africa, today announced that F-Secure had received further recognition for the virus searching capabilities of its F-Secure Anti-Virus product.

F-Secure`s latest security product, F-Secure Anti-Virus version 5, was submitted for comparative testing for the first time to the April issue of the Virus Bulletin magazine. The results were excellent, with F-Secure Anti-Virus awarded the prestigious "VB100%" award.

In the comparative review, F-Secure Anti-Virus detected 100% of in-the-wild viruses, macro viruses and polymorphic viruses, getting better detection rates than any of the competing products, including products from Network Associates, Symantec or Computer Associates International.

F-Secure Anti-Virus version 5 also supported scanning more file formats than any of the other products tested. With support for archived file formats such as ZIP, TAR, MIME and CAB, F-Secure Anti-Virus can detect viruses as they are downloaded via e-mail or from a web page, before they have a chance to activate.

"F-Secure Anti-Virus has undergone something of a makeover since its last appearance in Virus Bulletin comparative. A quick glance at the results shows that the high detection rates associated with this product still remain", comments Virus Bulletin magazine.

"The independent test results of the Virus Bulletin magazine demonstrate once again that F-Secure is the technology leader in virus protection", says Manager of Anti-Virus Research Mikko Hypponen from F-Secure. "We`re very happy to see that the new version of our anti-virus product was immediately awarded with VB100%."

The Virus Bulletin 100% awards recognise anti-virus products best able to detect viruses known to be `in the wild` as reported by the WildList Organisation. Virus Bulletin uses the most up-to-date WildList in its tests. This means that products that are updated most frequently are the ones most likely to be granted VB 100% awards.

The WildList, a list of viruses known to be causing real-world incidents, is produced by a diverse group of over 55 qualified volunteers all over the world. F-Secure Corporation is one the parties reporting to the WildList Organisation.

The April 2000 VB100% is the latest in the long list of awards given to F-Secure Anti-Virus, including:

  • Anti-Virus Checkmark level 2, West Coast Labs, March 2000

  • Perfect in-the-wild macro scanner, Virus Test Center Hamburg, February 2000

  • Comparative review victory, PCM magazine, February 2000

  • 100% detection rate, University of Tampere, September 1999

  • Editors Choice, PC Professionell (PC Magazine Germany), July 1999

  • ICSA Anti-Virus certification, ICSA.net, June 1999
