Facebook to add music service

“Facebook Vibes”, the music service allegedly located within Facebook's video chat install code, is billed to be unveiled at Facebook's upcoming f8 conference, in August, says Om Malik, of popular blog GigaOM.

While Facebook's new service will be music-based, the official name is still up in the air. The recent video-chat functionality employed by Facebook is referred to as “Peep” within its code, suggesting that “Vibes” may just be an easy-to-reference term to use while programming.

Music and media is the next logical step for Facebook, which has already established itself as a driving force in online retailing, gaming and news.

With a burgeoning user base of over 750 million users, the popular social site is working to integrate with as many aspects of its users' lives as it can.

What to expect

Facebook and Spotify, an online music program, have been collaborating over an upcoming music service, says Forbes.com, meaning it is a possibility that a streaming service with inbuilt audio and visual advertising will be implemented.

Spotify demonstrates the trend that users are moving away from traditional distribution methods to free access to a massive collection of music, rather than ownership of individual tracks stored locally.

With established services like Last.fm, SoundCloud and iTunes, Forbes says Facebook would be wise to allow for connectivity and importing of user data from other services to encourage user activity and quickly allow users to consume media relevant to them.

It is expected that “Facebook Vibes” will take features from new offerings such as Turntable.fm, exemplifying immediacy and social links based on music tastes.
