Faculty Training Institute receives full SAQA accreditation

By Faculty Training Institute
Johannesburg, 11 May 2010

Faculty Training Institute, leading provider of professional courses for business analysts, testing specialists and project managers, has been awarded full accreditation by ISETT SETA and is one of the first institutions specialising in business analysis training in South Africa to have met the stringent quality control requirements of ISETT SETA.

The accreditation by ISETT reaffirms that FTI is a credible training institution with the necessary systems and processes in place to offer delegates learning programmes that are in line with best practice and meet the highest quality standards.

“We recognise the value of SA-related quality benchmarks for the courses we provide for our clients and, as a leading national training provider, expect to meet and exceed the relevant standards as set out by ISETT SETA and the National Qualifications Framework,” says Steve Erlank, MD of FTI.

“Our strategy in the last few years has been to benchmark, align and accredit our courses with appropriate global institutions like the Project Management Institute (PMI) and International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). Our programmes are aimed at providing career path training for professionals in project management, business analysis, testing, enterprise architecture and business process management, who are primarily interested in vocational and professional qualifications with a global status and recognition. In the main, they do not require entry-level skills, because they are transitioning into their second or third careers. However, recent exciting shifts in the local skills development landscape mean that the main programmes we offer now fall within the expanded remit of the NQF, and our strategy has evolved to address this,” says Erlank.

The recent restructuring of the SETAs and the launch of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTOs) now places much more emphasis on the need for training programmes that deliver individuals who are immediately employable and productive because they are oriented towards a profession or trade where skills are very scarce and in demand, and where the training lends itself to developing professional competency rather than adding to knowledge.

“We operate in the high end of the knowledge industry,” says Erlank. “Given our audience, one of the problems we have faced has been the lack of many appropriate unit standards that are consistent with the high-end analytical and professional skills we teach. Many standards just haven't existed until now and South Africa has really needed them,” says Erlank. “To alleviate this problem, FTI actively assisted an ISETT-sponsored SGB, offering its extensive insight and experience to help develop standards and qualifications in business analysis. South Africa now boasts two new qualifications and supporting unit standards in business analysis.”

FTI researches and develops all of its own courses and training materials. “Because we continually update our course materials, our client companies and their delegates can now rely on the fact that the training they do is of a global standard, but also conforms to the unique requirements of the South African context,” states Erlank.

The recently awarded accreditation by ISETT is testimony to the expert knowledge that is developed into FTI courses and programmes that meet and surpass industry standards. Faculty Training Institute has a 21-year track record of providing training excellence and skills development to a 'professional knowledge based society'. This community comprises not only professional individuals within the IT industry but also professional individuals from industries and knowledge domains where high-order thinking and the ability to innovate and solve problems is prized.

Faculty Training Institute

Faculty Training Institute (FTI) is a private training company that specialises in offering world-class career-oriented training courses for professional knowledge workers, mainly in the corporate world. Focusing on mid-career rather than entry-level training, FTI specialises in project management, business analysis, systems analysis, technical writing, IT management, enterprise architecture, and technical writing training. It offers a variety of training options, including public or in-house, part-time or full-time courses.

FTI was founded in 1989 by five experienced lecturers from the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town, who perceived a gap between the technical or entry level training offered by most private training companies, and the longer degree programmes offered by tertiary institutions. During the past 20 years, FTI has expanded its successful product offerings from the initial two Diploma courses into growing range of diplomas and short courses that serve the career needs of corporate South Africa.

In October 2006, FTI was awarded Charter Endorsed Education Provider (EEP) status with the International Institute for Business Analysis (IIBA). It is one of a handful of training organisations worldwide who have achieved this status. FTI has received full accreditation from ISETT SETA.
