LG Electronics (LGE) SA showcased its new DVD-ROM drive at Computer Faire 2001.
According to Jaehong Kim, product manager: IT products at LGE SA, the drive reads DVD data at 16x max (21.6MB/sec). "Access to this kind of data has never been so fast," comments Kim. "The DRD-8160B sets new standards for DVD performance."
The drive boasts a CD data transfer rate of 7.200KBps and supports DVD-R/RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, CD-R/RW, Photo CD, CD-Extra, CD-I, Video CD, CD-ROM and CD-DA disk formats. It is also compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Windows NT 4.0, and OS/2 Warp operating systems.
"For the 16x DVD-ROM drive to operate at its highest speed, the user`s PC must at least be an Intel Pentium II model and support Ultra DMA33. In the same vein, a Pentium II 350MHz or higher with a fast VGA card is necessary to watch DVD movies with a DVD-ROM drive," explains Kim.
