Fibreplus, the local fibre optic cabling distributor, has endorsed the training programmes of BICSI, the international telecommunications association, and will integrate its methodologies within its own technician training programmes.
The Fibreplus offers training courses and certification programmes from R&M (Reichle & De-Massari), the Swiss-based fibre optic cabling products vendor.
Hermann Sidler, chief technology officer at Fibreplus, says the BICSI benchmark will assist technicians to install, test, maintain upgrade and expand a corporate cabling infrastructure to the highest standards.
"Today a company`s internal cabling infrastructure is essential to its business operations, particularly Internet-driven businesses such as Internet services providers (ISPs), application service providers (ASPs), Web hosts and content providers," says Sidler.
"This requires the installation, housing and maintenance of sensitive and highly technical mission-critical equipment. BICSI training principles will help ensure that R&M technicians keep ahead of technological advances and continue to deploy best-practice."
Sidler says the decision by Fibreplus to adopt BICSI protocols within its R&M training was taken in the interests of effective integration of fibre optic cabling with security systems, fire suppression and uninterruptible power supply systems currently central to most corporate infrastructures.
"For most organisations, constant updates to incorporate technological advances in terms of standards and applications mean that future-proofing the cabling infrastructure is of paramount importance.
"Simply installing cable and connectivity products that support emerging high-bandwidth applications is insufficient. Today it is just as imperative to ensure that the skills of those installing and maintaining such a high specification infrastructure equals the capabilities of the equipment they handle," he adds.
