Fibreplus, a South African supplier of end-to-end cabling solutions, is brokering the deal, which also includes South African cabling manufacturers, who will supply their cabling to the US-based company.
In terms of the contract, IFC want to source 1600km of fibre cabling a month from the South African consortium. The deal is estimated to be worth around R672m in the first year locally.
Fibreplus director, Dave Fawcett, says that there is a worldwide shortage of singlemode fibre optic cabling because the major manufacturers are lagging behind the demand in the marketplace.
This prompted IFC to seek out new sources of fibre optic cabling to complement its existing supplier base and to help them cope with demand.
"We made contact with IFC through the web, after an initial round of discussions and a local visit by the COO Anthony Baumann, the company was satisfied that the products supplied by Fibreplus and its principals are of a world-class standard and placed an order for as much cabling as we could supply," says Fawcett.
"We believe that this deal represents a major coup for the South African cabling market, and shows that we can compete on the world stage. The relationship with IFC will have major potential spin-offs for Fibreplus and its partners because of the exposure all our products will get on the international front."
