Fight against missing and abused children strengthened with enhanced web sites

By Computer Associates Africa
Johannesburg, 01 Sept 2003

Missing and abused children is one the saddest and most desperate issues faced by society today. In an effort to fight this worldwide problem, the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC) recently introduced its enhanced web sites to the international and South African general public.

Already the rate of missing children in SA has gone up from 82 percent to 88 percent since the establishment of http://za.missingkids.com by the ICMEC, Computer Associates, the South African Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (SACMEC) and the South African Police Services` Bureau for Missing Persons in 2000.

The enhanced children web sites now builds on this success, enabling visitors to more quickly find up-to-date information on missing children`s cases around the world, therefore, facilitating more swift recoveries.

Comments captain Fanie van Deventer, Manager of the Bureau for Missing Persons, SAPS: "The web site now offers a more user-friendly search function, making it far more accessible plus enabling users to obtain information quickly."

"Also, hoax e-mails - a growing concern to us - that offer information on so-called missing children can be countered effectively, as users can simply cross-reference this information on the site`s search engine to check if it is legitimate."

The web sites enhancements were enabled with the help of the ICMEC`s corporate technology partners, Computer Associates and Sun Microsystems.

New features on the web sites include an "" section that highlights missing children photos, a "Quick Search for Missing Children" feature that allows visitors to look up a missing child based on the most frequently used search options, and the ability to handle non-Latin alphabets.

CA`s Unicenter, BrightStor, eTrust and CleverPath solutions the web sites` supporting IT infrastructure, while Sun`s programmers designed the new web site software, built it and donated maintenance services.
