Fill up with virtual money

Johannesburg, 19 Jan 2010

First National 's (FNB) rewards programme, eBucks, can now be used at Engen stations in SA.

The virtual money, earned when FNB customers shop, can now be spent on fuel at 600 petrol stations in SA, in addition to other outlets, such as Look and Listen and Kalahari.net.

eBucks launched the initiative a month ago as a way of allowing members to spend the R500 million in unspent rewards. The company says it is too soon to tell how the partnership is doing, as new such as Engen only feel the effects in a year to a year-and-a-half.

eBucks CEO Lezanne Human says the partnership makes “free fuel accessible to consumers without discounting or incentivising, which is prohibited by legislation”.

Engen retail marketing manager Pierr Roodt explains that the company has put technological systems in place to allow widespread usage of debit and credit cards nationally at the company's stations.

Roodt adds that the system allows Engen to venture into other payment methods like eBucks. “This allows for FNB to quickly implement the eBucks payment method at Engen service stations.”

The system works the same as when paying for fuel with another card, such as a credit card, and customers can pay in eBucks and credit cards. However, there is a R10 transaction fee.
