Local MaxTech distributor, Business & Design Software (B&D), has released a systems management product which supports a wide range of diverse UNIX operating system platforms.
Nico Spence, a director of B&D, says the new product monitors critical parameters affecting a remote system`s performance and is able to automatically alert users via an alpha pager before a problem occurs. "OUTPOST is an affordable systems management solution ideal for value-added resellers (VARs) who manage multiple client systems from remote, non-networked locations," he says.
He adds that OUTPOST provides systems administrators with the ability to tune systems for optimal performance while also allowing system activity to be recorded for later review and diagnosis. "The graphical real-time display allows administrators to tell at a glance if key system parameters have had heavy usage," continues Spence.
"OUTPOST takes up very little disk space and works without a device driver which means that it can be installed without taking the systems down and without having to re-link the operating system kernel," he explains. The complete installation requires 2MB of disk space and a further 1MB of virtual memory is needed for each running OUTPOST session.
Consistent with its policy of allowing users to `try before buying`, MaxTech is making trial versions of its software available to interested parties. "Starting OUTPOST for the first time will automatically generate a free 30-day licence and allow users to evaluate a working copy of the software in the environment for which it is intended," he says.
Available in its initial release for the AIX, SCO MPX and Unixware, Solaris (on both the Intel and Sparc platforms), Unisys and Novell Unixware strains of UNIX, the product is currently being ported to other versions.
