Global competition is forcing changes in all aspects of our society from business to government, and education. Customers demand more. Companies realize that they have to change all aspects of their organisations as well as the processes they use to do the work, in order to be more competitive.
"The problems we created cannot be solved at the same level as when we created them " Mario Andretti
Business improvement has been high on the agenda of most successful and/or emerging organisations, globally for many years. What makes some companies better than others at improving their performance as well as improving the skill of their workforce?
Several methodologies exist to bring this about, but non-as powerful as Six Sigma. At many organisations Six Sigma simply means a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. But Six Sigma is much more than only a measure of quality. Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects in any process - from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service processes. To understand Six Sigma it is important to understand its focus areas.
How can we fund our Six Sigma Initiative?
Six Sigma has been successfully linked to the Generic Certificate / learnership for Generic Management NQF level 5. This will enable your organisation to claim a grant from your Seta as well as receive the additional benefits through a tax allowance for every person enrolled on the learnership. This enables you to raise the necessary funding for embarking on the Six Sigma Business Improvement methodology in your organisation, and ensuring a transfer of skills to the employees enrolled on this Learnership. Six Sigma is outcomes based, and you work on a real life case study through your Training process.
What is a learnership?
(Adapted from the A- Z of learnerships by the Service Seta)
A Learnership is a structured programme, of necessary training and practice, designed to take place over the period of one year. It is structured in-that it combines elements of education and training, with working experience. At the end of the Learnership, Learners have the opportunity of being assessed and certificated as competent. A Learnership is a fixed-term contract between Employer and Learner (Employee) and is possibly the only fixed-term contract which does not give rise to any expectation of ongoing employment at the end of the Learnership.
What are the benefits?
The principle benefit of a Learnership is that the Employer has the benefit of receiving a Learnership Grant from the Services SETA, which will cover the costs of all on-the-job training and education, any external training and education, all assessments and also, where the Learner is a new employee and not an existing employee, a Wage Subsidy.
