Alarming statistics published in 2006 by the CSI/FBI computer and crime survey show even though 97% of enterprises surveyed use anti-virus software and 98% use a firewall, 65% still suffered from a virus outbreak or similar incident.
Gartner recently estimated that over 80% of breaches to a company's IT security actually originate from within the company itself.
With typically 70% or more of an organisation's IP and other confidential information residing and therefore accessible in the network and messaging systems, it's clear that the potential damage from employee action, both malicious and unintentional, is significant.
This can include the loss of sensitive or private information right through to the shutdown of the entire network through introduced viruses and malware.
Condyn, Africa's premier security distributor which delivers a comprehensive security platform through its Condyn Security Framework, today announced a focus to secure the "end point". The campaign includes a white paper on end point security, a free, no commitment two-week trial of the solution, and an attractive price reduction for purchases made before the end of March 2007.
"Organisations of all sizes need to take internal security seriously. They cannot protect themselves simply by installing gateway solutions - as essential as these are," said Stuart Winter, Director of Sales, Condyn.
"They must complement these through end point solutions that ensure user actions are monitored and controlled in line with policies put into place. Solutions that will stop altogether, or allow with full audit ability, the use of 'removable' media; only allow 'safe' and trusted connections; spot and restrict malware, virus and spam; halt a user's access to unauthorised programs and files; and securely lock down the internal networks.
"Systems that will close the front door opened deliberately or inadvertently by staff to external parties likely to cause damage, while also closing the back door, preventing staff leaking confidential information; and will encrypt devices and information on the fly where transmission is required and allowed - this is what the End Point solution set from Condyn is built to achieve," he said.
"It's so much more than just anti-virus," noted Condyn Product Director Andre Grove. "Using the very best technology from global leaders in their fields - Internet Security Systems, Pointsec and Securewave, the platform is true end point protection for desktops, laptops, as well as mobile and smart phones. Condyn protects the new perimeter - which is now the mobile perimeter," he said.
The end point building block from within the Condyn Security Framework can:
* Encrypt "end-point" devices such as laptops and PCs, as well as mobile phones, so the devices, and therefore the information contained on them, can only be accessed by the authorised user.
* Stop all unwanted executables. Define what's allowed and all other code is blocked. Spyware, unlicensed software and all executable "malware" simply cannot run.
* Stop unauthorised attempts to install non-official applications (downloads from the Internet or use of I/O devices such as CDROM drives or USB memory sticks to install).
* Reduce the management cost of a network by up to 60%, increasing the stability and availability of critical business applications while at the same time reducing instances of support-intervention on desktops, laptops and servers.
* Patch systems and software without stress and panic, safe in the knowledge that no rogue code could ever exploit vulnerability.
* Control access to USB sticks, PDAs, cameras, CD/DVD, and all other devices. Limit how much data is copied out and audit what is taken.
* Support BS7799/ISO7799 standards.
"This programme allows customers to test the solutions for themselves. They don't have to take our word for just how good this solution set is, they can make up their own mind, because we believe that once tested, the benefits will speak for themselves," said Stuart Winter.
