First B2B transaction for Commerce One SA through MarketSite Africa

Johannesburg, 15 Jul 2000

Commerce One, Inc, provider of e-commerce solutions for business, yesterday announced the completion of the first commercial transactions through Commerce One South Africa`s MarketSite portal, MarketSite Africa.

Sasol, SA`s largest producer of synthetic fuels and chemical products, generated electronic purchase orders using the Commerce One BuySite e-procurement application. These purchase orders were processed by the Commerce One South Africa MarketSite portal and delivered instantaneously to several suppliers. The company expects to realise significant savings through the use of the Commerce One solution.

Over time Sasol expects to benefit through a substantial reduction in transaction costs as well as improved sales.

Johan du Preez, project manager, e-procurement for Sasol, says: "It is a significant milestone in the project to transact through this new technology. We are glad to report that our planning is on track to meet our objective of having a significant percentage of our purchasing online at year-end."

Richard Mackinnon-Little, E-Business Director for Management Consulting Services, PricewaterhouseCoopers says: "This first BuySite implementation in Southern Africa adds to PricewaterhouseCoopers` global track record as a preferred systems integrator of Commerce One."

Sasol, assisted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, has been very aggressive in the adoption of e-business initiatives. The use of Commerce One technology will provide the group with a springboard to connect to suppliers, industry portals and customers worldwide.

Says Mckinnon-Little: "The project will realise savings, not only through the simplification of the process, but also by having visibility of the purchasing spend, and using this information to leverage buying power and reduce off-contract spending."

Michael Bosman, CEO of Commerce One South Africa, Distributor Operations, says: "It is significant that we have reached the point where Sasol is making the first transactions through the Commerce One MarketSite in SA. We join a global community that is realising the advantages of trading this way. By transacting through MarketSite, we believe that Sasol can seamlessly link with its suppliers enabling huge cost savings. Not only will Sasol be able to trade with its local suppliers, but through the Commerce One Global Trading Web it will be able to access the world`s largest electronic marketplace for goods and services."
