First community-based instant messaging from iPlanet

Johannesburg, 06 Nov 2001

Sun Microsystems has announced the industry's first portal environment that incorporates collaborative, community-based instant messaging.

"Until now, enterprise instant messaging solutions could be used internally only. The iPlanet Portal Instant Collaboration Pack however allows users to extend, secure instant messaging services beyond their corporate borders to customers, partners and suppliers," says Duncan Peruch, business solution manager for Sun Microsystems SA.

The Instant Collaboration Pack is designed to meet the needs of both service providers and enterprise customers. It provides the extensive security, reliability and directory integration required to support instant messaging amongst external and internal employees.

Peruch comments: "The product leverages the community management, single sign-on and secure remote access capabilities of the iPlanet Portal Server enabling users to be easily identified and authenticated.

"Secure instant messaging is becoming essential for providing real-time, mobile collaboration to enterprise and individual PC and cellular phone users," he says.

Featured the Instant Collaboration Pack includes polling, chat rooms, alerts and the ability to create work groups and share files and URLs in a completely secure environment.

The Instant Collaboration Pack forms part of Sun ONE (Open Net Environment) that entails vision, architecture, platform and expertise enabling the development and delivery of services on demand.

Sun and AOL have also announced their plans to perform interoperability testing between the Instant Collaboration Pack and the AOL Instant Messenger.
