IT distribution company, First Distribution has signed an agreement to represent storage and solutions vendor, Pivot3, in South and central Africa.

In a statement, First Distribution says the Pivot3 vSTAC product family delivers seamlessly converged, highly available shared storage and virtual server appliances that are purpose-built for modern virtual server and workloads.

It adds that Pivot3 ships pre-configured and tuned vSTAC appliances for different target solutions, including virtualisation, video surveillance and virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI).

With a strong background in virtualisation, First Distribution will exploit the opportunity to drive Pivot3's solutions into the South and central African markets, the distributor notes.

Paddy Field, senior solutions architect and virtualisation specialist at First Distribution, says: "By combining the compute and storage requirements for virtual desktops in an optimised appliance, Pivot3 delivers predictable performance and linear scale-out, allowing organisations to accelerate the adoption of VDI without the necessity for complicated infrastructures and large initial investments.

"The Pivot3 vSTAC architecture allows users to 'pay as they grow' with dynamic scaling and predictable performance."

The distributor also points out that, as part of VMware's Rapid Desktop Appliance Program, Pivot3 also ships a vSTAC VDI P Cubed appliance that enables customers to experience virtualised desktops in less than one hour through the 'View-in-a-box' appliance.

First Distribution expects the agreement to drive more VMware View sales and has already assigned a dedicated and experienced internal business unit manager to strategically market the product.

Tony Abrahall, First Distribution's GM, says: "Adoption of VDI has been slower than expected predominantly due to the higher-than-anticipated costs of building and managing data centre infrastructure to support VDI.

"Pivot3 reduces the cost, time-to-market and complexity by providing an appliance-based solution for VDI that can be managed outside of the core data centre while at the same time removing contention for precious data centre resources normally allocated to higher-priority line-of-business applications."
