Duxbury Networking has announced the first locally designed V.90 USB modem. The Duxbury 5600USB adds a fully-featured V.90 modem to any Universal Serial Bus (USB)-equipped system running Windows 95Windows 98or Windows NT.
Supporting the new ITU V.90 standard and offering backward compatibility with K56flex, the compact modem is no larger than a small PCMCIA dongle.
It may be used for virtually any existing datacomm application including RAS, dial-out, Internet proxy services and business Internet services, according to managing director, Graham Duxbury.
He says the modem demonstrates the potential of USB technology to enhance data communications systems tools: "The V.90 is a valuable protocol for business communications," he says. "With its plug and play capability, this product lends ease-of-use as well as versatility for IS managers or power users.
The unit features an external USB Series B type interface for detachable external devices, and installs easily with Plug and Play operation under Windows 95/98 and NT.
No power supply is needed as the modem draws power from the host computer`s USB port.
In a related announcement, Duxbury has released a 5600USB 4-port hub, capable of expanding a USB-ready PC system to have three additional USB ports.
