First pro-active Internet virus security solution protects against e-mail-based attacks

McAfee, a Associates business, today announced that its McAfee Outbreak Manager product, the first pro-active solution for stopping potential virus outbreaks before they occur, successfully protected e-businesses from the damage caused by recent outbreaks.

The Love Bug worm and its variants were the fastest spreading viruses ever, causing more than R47 billion in damage, estimated by research firm Computer Economics. During the recent virus outbreaks, global Internet connectivity enabled the email-borne Love Bug and NewLove viruses to spread faster, becoming more destructive than previous outbreaks. Companies now require around-the-clock virus security solutions to stop email-based virus outbreaks, such as these, from occurring.

The McAfee Outbreak Manager solution is breakthrough virus security technology that stops new Internet-borne threats by looking for suspicious patterns and activities typical of new and unknown viruses, and then stopping their methods of spreading.

The McAfee Outbreak Manager solution pro-actively alerts e-businesses on new threats, day and night, and can also stop email-borne denial of service attacks and email hoaxes. It helps minimise damage by quickly halting unknown Internet viruses, and stopped NewLove and Love Bug at customer sites by quarantining them based on predefined thresholds, preventing the viruses from reaching intended recipients.

"Computer viruses, such as NewLove and Love Bug, take advantage of global Internet interconnectivity, and continue to strike and mutate more quickly, with greater consequences for e-business," said Lloyd Wood, managing director Network Associates SA. "By integrating McAfee Outbreak Manager with our Internet and email-based virus security solutions, we provide companies with industry-leading Internet anti-virus protection that is designed to actually stop outbreaks before they start, securing a company`s infrastructure from new attacks."

The McAfee Outbreak Manager solution is included with the McAfee GroupShield for Microsoft Exchange and McAfee WebShield software, bringing new levels of speed, manageability and intelligence to Internet virus security.

The McAfee GroupShield for Exchange product is the industry`s first GroupWare anti-virus product to include integration with the new Microsoft Virus Scan API included in Microsoft Exchange 5.5 SP3, maximising protection from viruses for over 40 million Exchange users worldwide.

The McAfee WebShield product combines the industry-leading virus detection and cleaning engine with the rock-solid architecture of a proxy-based firewall to provide unprecedented performance and reliability for Internet-based virus defense. By watching over the Internet gateway, the McAfee WebShield solution can detect and immobilise viruses before they enter or leave the corporate computing environment.

The McAfee Outbreak Manager, McAfee GroupShield and McAfee WebShield solutions are key components of the McAfee Active Virus Defense suite, the next generation, easy-to-manage integrated Internet virus security solution. Together with ePolicy Orchestrator and Anti-Virus Informant, e-businesses can now centrally manage virus policy, offer customisable updates and configurations and use graphical reporting methods to get a comprehensive view of savings provided by each tier in their anti-virus protection strategy.
