Five more PC makers sign Java distribution alliances

Johannesburg, 24 Oct 2003

Five of the world's largest PC makers have signed Java technology distribution agreements with Sun Microsystems.

Acer, Gateway, Samsung, Toshiba and Tsinghua Tongfang have joined Apple, Dell and HP, along with Lindows.com and Red Hat, in shipping the most current and compatible version of Java.

"Because so many Internet and other applications rely on Java technology for proper functioning, PC vendors understand the need to supply the platform with their products to provide a better customer experience," says Sean O'Hare, Java systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA.

The total PC vendor agreements to date represent more than 50% of the PC desktop marketplace and ensure that Sun's Java Runtime Environment will be pre-installed on these companies' systems.

O'Hare says Sun expects further agreements to be concluded with other manufacturers in the near future.
