Florida gets roving digital literacy programme

Workforce Solutions is starting a roving literacy programme that will provide computer access and training to Treasure Coast residents difficult to reach through traditional methods, TC Palm states.

Using $250 000 in federal stimulus funds recently distributed by Workforce Florida, the private, non-profit agency is buying a 28-foot mobile unit that will function as a Mobile Information Technology Academy.

Unlike Workforce Solutions' two other mobile units that help people look for jobs, the mobile unit will provide training in specific computer skills that will broaden the clients' job qualifications.

Training for security pros

A new qualification programme has been introduced to up-skill infocomm professionals in Singapore, reports Channel News Asia.

It is part of the five-year infocomm security masterplan to harden the country against attacks.

Singapore's latest move to thwart cyber criminals is to equip security professionals and the man in the street with the know-how to defend themselves. More than 75% of businesses use infocomm technology or ICT.

Women's training course fruitful

The computer-training course for women mooted by the Jammu University at Bhaderwah town of Doda district (India) a few years ago has yielded fruitful results, notes Sify News.

The certificate course is the first of its kind and was commenced at Bhaderwah in 2006. Since then, 10 batches of girls and women students have qualified in basic computer operations and allied applications.

"We have benefited a lot through the e-learning. The course is only conducted in Bhaderwah and it is especially designed for women. It will help us a lot for our career," Rahi Jubeen, a student at the e-learning institute, Jammu University, says.
