FNB Card Security Week runs from 10 to 16 November 2003, as a way of alerting consumers to information that will help keep their card details safe.
Today, cards have become the Internet payment method of choice, accounting for the majority of transactions taking place on the Net.
Transacting online offers the ultimate in shopping convenience; you can order groceries for the weekend, or a present for a forgotten birthday without even setting foot outside. However, the key to keeping your card details safe online is to approach your cyberspace transactions with the same amount of vigilance and care that you would exercise in a normal retail environment.
These are some of the tips to look out for when using your credit/debit card online:
* Always check that the Web address of the site that you are on is the same as that which you requested.
* Check the security certificate of the site you`re on - if you`re not satisfied with it - leave the site.
* Only provide your card details to reputable companies and for single purchases.
* Avoid giving your card details to "adult" entertainment sites.
* Check that a picture of a closed lock appears at the bottom of your screen if you are using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. This indicates a secure shopping site.
* Remember that you can shop online in the eBucks shop with complete peace of mind, as there is never a need to enter any credit card details.
* Do not send e-mails containing pertinent card information.
* Check your credit card statements as soon as they arrive, if there any suspicious debits, query them immediately.
