FNB embraces Virgin Mobile

Johannesburg, 01 Aug 2006

First National (FNB) cellphone has added Virgin Mobile to its offering, meaning Virgin Mobile customers are able to register for FNB cellphone banking if they hold a qualifying FNB account.

FNB says this enables them to buy Virgin Mobile prepaid airtime for themselves or anyone else. FNB Cellphone Banking customers on the MTN, Vodacom and Cell C networks can also buy Virgin Mobile airtime for anyone else directly from their cellphone.

FNB Mobile and Transact Solutions CEO Len Pienaar says 770 000 transactions worth R77 million passed through the cellphone banking systems in May alone.

"This far exceeds the 500 000 transactions target expected in December, while demand for prepaid top-up has demonstrated the reliance of our customers on this channel for their airtime needs," Pienaar says.

He says FNB allows for the sale of Virgin Mobile airtime through its cellphone banking channel only, but is expecting to add channels such as ATMs and the in future.

"However, the demand for this service on cellphone banking is considerable," he adds. "During May 2006, more than R12.5 million prepaid airtime passed through cellphone banking, with more than 350 000 transactions in that month alone," he says.
