Fortinet secure content processing software released

Johannesburg, 03 Feb 2004

Maxtec Peripherals has introduced a range of Fortinet real time network protection products to the local market..

Robby Pedrica, Fortinet product manager in South Africa, says the FortiGate family of Secure Content Processing Gateways (SCPGs) is the first to support network-based delivery of high-performance, application level services such as virus protection and content filtering.

"FortiGate SCPGs also support network-level services such as firewalls, virtual private networks (VPNs), intrusion detection and traffic shaping," he says. "These services enable organisations to improve security, reduce network misuse and abuse and better utilise their communication resources, without compromising network performance."

FortiGate SCPGs are dedicated hardware/software platforms located at the edge of enterprise and service provider networks that are powerful enough to scan content at the application level and detect network threats in real time. Pedrica says that the FortiGate models address the needs of small offices/home offices, small businesses, branch offices, enterprises and service providers. "Host-based, anti-virus and content-filtering offerings have definite benefits, but deploying them throughout an extended enterprise requires a lot of effort to manage and can still leave companies open to attacks and inappropriate content," says Pedrica.

"A prime example of this would be the recent attacks of the MyDoom virus," he adds. "The comprehensive security features found in the Fortinet product have helped users to successfully avoid this type of malicious damage thereby fulfilling its promise to provide real time network protection and greater security defence against viruses."

FortiGate Antivirus Firewalls employ Fortinet`s FortiASIC content processing chip and the secure FortiOS operation system to achieve its performance levels. This ASIC-based architecture analyses content and behaviour in real time, enabling key applications to be deployed right at the network edge where they are most effective at protecting enterprise networks.

"The FortiGate systems add a critical layer of real time, network-based anti-virus protection that complements host-based anti-virus software and supports defence strategies without compromising performance or cost," says Pedrica. "They can be deployed for anti-virus protection and content filtering alone in conjunction with existing firewall, VPN and related devices, or as complete network protection systems with just a simple configuration change."

Pedrica believes that network-based deployment of application-level content processing is an idea whose time has come. "The Fortinet product line represents the start of an evolution in how organisations will deploy network security and content management services," he concludes.
