Former HP and IBM executive Oliver Fortuin has been appointed to lead BT's operations in sub-Saharan Africa.

The IBM veteran will be in charge of growing BT's business and leading its regional management team, replacing former regional MD Keith Matthews.

With 24 years of experience in the technology industry, Fortuin is lead independent non-executive director of Ellies Holdings. Last year, he joined JSE-listed Adapt IT's board as an independent non-executive member.

Fortuin left IBM in 2012 to establish his own business, after holding the position of country head for three years. Prior to that, he was HP's country manager between November 2008 and May 2009.

Fortuin had headed HP's Technology Services Group from April 2007 and was also previously responsible for HP's services and outsourcing business.

Prior to joining HP, Fortuin had spent a decade with IBM.

BT established its Sub-Saharan African headquarters in SA in 1992. Matthews previously said BT recognised that Sub-Saharan Africa is an attractive, growing ICT market. "We focus on serving the increasing requirements of the home-grown multinational companies and global companies that are expanding in Africa."
