The Government Information Factory (GIF), a concept coined by internationally acclaimed "father of data warehousing", Bill Inmon, addresses the unique requirements of government information processing. This includes holistic, passive and proactive security, scalability and sharing of data within and between government agencies.
The GIF also provides a migration path to move from a stovepipe environment to a GIF environment, providing an enterprise-wide view of data. In many regards, the GIF is considered the next generation of architecture for government entities.
The Information Factory concept will be explored in-depth by Inmon at the Data Warehousing and the Information Factory: Best Practices Forum on 9 and 10 March at Gallagher Estate, Midrand. The two-day forum will showcase both the GIF and the Corporate Information Factory (CIF). Attendees will learn the essential characteristics of the major components of the Information Factory and will gain insight into strategies for implementing intelligent warehousing both within discrete functions and across the enterprise.
The GIF component will cover a comprehensive range of topics, including sharing data across government agencies, ownership of data within the agency and across government, security across the government, politics of data sharing, creating reusable data, the architectural components of the GIF, the management of older data, scalability and performance, and metadata across the government.
The Best Practices Forum will be followed by a one-day workshop on 11 March: "Implementing an Information Factory Program: A Practitioner`s Workshop"
The event is being hosted by the Computer Society of South Africa (CSSA) in collaboration with the System Crafter`s Guild and the Gavroshe In-Depth Series.
