Freemium games are catching up to premium games when it comes to generating revenue.

This is according to entertainment provider Mondia Media, which explains that freemium apps are able to generate revenue through virtual goods purchases or game upgrades.

The company says these virtual goods can be bought while playing the game from within the app. Mondia Media adds that, on average, 10% of users upgrade their freemium games.

The company has partnered with mobile games service provider Tequila Mobile to deliver freemium games with a global in-app billing solution, as part of the Tequila Planet freemium games platform. In line with this partnership, Mondia Media says its freemium games are available in the PlayNow store, which is preinstalled on Sony handsets.

According to the company, freemium games have increased traffic to the store, while downloads of freemium games have exceeded those of premium games. The company also points out that the average revenue per freemium game surpasses that of popular game titles.

In the coming months, Mondia Media says it will provide an in-app purchase API to broaden its offering to more operators and manufacturers.
