FrontRange launches SAM Suite, helps drive down IT procurement, service costs with end-to-end management of software assets

Single-vendor solution provides software discovery, licence management and life cycle management.

Johannesburg, 25 Mar 2009

FrontRange Solutions, the developer of business software for mid-sized and distributed enterprises, today announced FrontRange SAM Suite, its new offering to help organisations realise cost savings and avoid unnecessary expenditure through improved software management.

FrontRange SAM Suite is the first product to be launched by the newly-created Infrastructure Management Group at FrontRange, and helps organisations address three distinct areas of pain in their IT and business operations: eliminating spend on unnecessary software purchases, avoiding potentially costly non-compliance fines and minimising the administrative overhead associated with the ongoing management of software assets.

FrontRange SAM Suite comprises three core components: asset discovery, licence management and application life cycle management. FrontRange has created the new integrated solution through the acquisition of Enteo, in 2007, and Centennial Software, in 2008. According to Nick Perkins of FrontRange Solutions South Africa: “In the current economic climate, organisations need to realise immediate cost savings, avoid unnecessary costs and put themselves in the strongest possible position going forward. It is an irony of modern business that, despite investing huge amounts of financial and human capital into IT, organisations often have less interest in effectively tracking and managing those assets than they do in maintaining the company car. FrontRange SAM Suite is a single-vendor solution that enables organisations to realise each of these goals.”

With increasing activity from both software vendors and licensing watchdogs, FrontRange believes that managing software licences will be a key IT priority for 2009.

“Software asset management is one area where IDC expects IT organisations to focus more attention in these tough economic times,” said Fred Broussard, Research Director for PC, Device and IT Service Management. “One of the first steps in creating an effective SAM program is ensuring your IT organisation knows exactly what software is on the network and work towards having organised, credible records of all licences and their uses.”

As well as ensuring the organisation is sufficiently licensed, FrontRange SAM Suite can also help enterprises prevent over-licensing, by enabling managers to pinpoint potential areas of duplication or disadvantageous licensing.

Finally, by automating many of the tasks around the deployment and configuration management, FrontRange SAM Suite enables IT staff to be more productive - spending more time on adding value to the organisation and less simply keeping the lights on.
