FrontRange Solutions (SA), a provider of business relationship and service management software to the mid-market, has been ranked number one in the business software solutions category of the Top 500 publication - which profiles South Africa`s best-managed companies.

The list of top-ranked companies in other sectors includes Adcock Ingram, Afrox, Anglo Platinum, BHP Billiton, Business Connexion, De Beers, Discovery, Edgars, Engen, Hewlett-Packard, Investec, L`Oreal, MultiChoice DSTV, Momentum, Pam Golding, Rand Water, Sun International and the University of South Africa.

In association with Cranfield University in the United Kingdom and the University of Stellenbosch Business School, the publishers of Top 500 developed a 15-point formula against which they measured 4 185 South African companies in 100 different sectors against their peers.

Both qualitative and quantitative research was done into the management practices and performance outcomes of each company. Research criteria included financial indicators such as revenue, profit, market share and growth as well as a company`s capabilities and track record in transformation and development - covering areas such as job creation, empowerment status, skills training and social responsibility.

Organisations were also measured on operational efficiency and innovation, including export orientation, industry standards and research and development.

"The publication focuses the spotlight on those leading companies whose transformation strategies complement and enhance their economic performance and, in so doing, advance the case for further foreign direct investment both in South Africa and the African continent as a whole," says Stephen Bennett, project co-ordinator for the Top 500 publication.

"In that context, FrontRange Solutions (SA) was clearly at the cutting edge of its sector, setting the benchmark for others to follow - not only within the software solutions industry but for other companies wishing to increase their standards of operation."

"Everyone`s aware that the way a company is managed in South Africa and Africa has more profound socio-economic and developmental implications than in developed countries - simply because issues of sustainability and growth are on such a knife edge here," says FrontRange Solutions (SA) product manager for Africa, Paul Bornhutter.

"So we are particularly proud of Top 500`s research findings, in that they acknowledge the contribution our management philosophy makes on a socio-economic level as well as recognising the quality of the content and design of our products.

"It`s nice to have it independently demonstrated that that our corporate values are bearing fruit in terms of the positive impact we have on both our own customers and the larger community."

Together with FrontRange Solutions, UCS Group, SAP Africa, Idion Technology and Software Futures constitute the top five companies in Top 500`s business software solutions category.
