Frost & Sullivan awards Proxim

Frost & Sullivan presented Proxim with the 2008 North American Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award, reports Fox Business

It recognised Proxim for its development of an integrated solution that converges WiMax, and WiFi Mesh into one solution - MeshMAX.

This award was based on Frost & Sullivan's recent analysis of integrated wireless technologies. Through this innovative concept, Proxim has brought to the fore the best that these three technologies have to offer in a single unit.

FMC predicted to disappoint

The hype surrounding fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) and Femtocells continues to grow, but it is likely that neither technology will live up to expectations, says SDA Asia.

According to a recent study done by In-Stat: "Whether to FMC, or to Femtocell: That is the Question!" there is much interest in fixed-mobile services enabled by Femtocells and FMC among consumers, with the promise of more convenience and lower costs.

Femtocells are micro-base stations designed for home use that supports mobile connectivity over the facility. FMC uses WiFi-enabled routers and handsets to carry mobile calls over a broadband connection.

Dell aims for mobile workforce

Dell recently quashed rumours it would buy troubled mobile company, Motorola, and make a move into the smartphone market, instead preferring to focus on mobility with laptops designed to serve the growing mobile workforce, says ZDNet Asia.

Last week, Gartner predicted that by 2012, around half the developed world's workers will be running virtualised desktops transported on portable storage devices like the iPod, rather than carrying laptops between work and home.

But, according to Ferrand, convergence between smartphones and laptops will increase as hardware manufacturers seek to create the ideal device for mobile workers.
