FTI lecturer receives Excellence in Research Award at PMSA 2010 Conference

By Faculty Training Institute
Cape Town, 06 Oct 2010

Faculty Training Institute lecturer Dr Carl Marnewick was recently awarded the prestigious Excellence in Research Award at the Project Management South Africa (PMSA) 2010 Conference.

The PMSA Conference is a means of facilitating professional development in the area of project management in South Africa, and this year's conference theme was 'Review, Reflect, Renew: Project Insight Gained and Lessons for the Future'. FTI is a leading provider of project management training in South Africa.

“Dr Marnewick is the programme manager for, and principal lecturer on, our Johannesburg-based Diploma in IS Project Management. He is a top lecturer who regularly receives excellent ratings from students,” says Steve Erlank, MD of FTI.

“We congratulate Dr Marnewick on his achievement. FTI sets very high standards for its lecturing staff and is highly selective about the people it uses for its facilitation. FTI mainly draws on a rich base of professional academics, practitioners and consultants for its facilitation. All FTI lecturers, in addition to being experts in the theoretical domains in which they teach, need also to be great presenters with real-world, practical expertise. To be able to call upon a lecturer of the calibre of Dr Carl Marnewick is a privilege,” continues Erlank.

The Excellence in Research Award is bestowed on PMSA members who actively contribute to the local and global project management body of knowledge by conducting and publishing formal research in portfolio, programme and project management.

The award positions research as a vital and integral component of the development of project management in South Africa. Van Olden continues: “This is perhaps the most prestigious accolade that a South African researcher can hope to secure as it is awarded for research of the highest quality and is presented every two years to allow nominees sufficient time to accumulate research outputs.”

The panel of judges included highly credible local and international researchers, convened by Professor Les Labuschagne of UNISA. The Research in Excellence Award bestowed on Dr Marnewick included the assessment of his articles, the credibility and stature of the journals of his published work and the promotion of scientific research in sphere of project management.

Faculty Training Institute

Faculty Training Institute (FTI) is a private training company that specialises in offering world-class career-oriented training courses for professional knowledge workers, mainly in the corporate world. Focusing on mid-career rather than entry-level training, FTI specialises in project management, business analysis, systems analysis, technical writing, IT management, enterprise architecture, and technical writing training. It offers a variety of training options, including public or in-house, part-time or full-time courses.

FTI was founded in 1989 by five experienced lecturers from the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town, who perceived a gap between the technical or entry level training offered by most private training companies, and the longer degree programmes offered by tertiary institutions. During the past 20 years FTI has expanded its successful product offerings from the initial two Diploma courses into growing range of diplomas and short courses that serve the career needs of corporate South Africa.

In October 2006 FTI was awarded Charter Endorsed Education Provider (EEP) status with the International Institute for Business Analysis (IIBA). It is one of a handful of training organisations worldwide that have achieved this status. FTI has received full accreditation from ISETT SETA and is a Registered Education Provider with the PMI.
