Fujitsu Siemens Computers is a founding partner of the Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) at Wits University. The JCSE is a strategic partnership between the City of Johannesburg, its oldest university and a number of key ICT industry stakeholders.
The centre is a truly collaborative initiative between government, academia and industry. Partners aim to create a pre-competitive space devoted to growing high-level skills, promoting best practice and supporting the growth of the software development industry in SA and Africa.
At the launch of the JCSE, City Mayor Amos Masondo said: "The centre is part of a broad strategy to grow the city`s economy. Our vision is to build Johannesburg into a world-class African city...whose economy and labour force will specialise in the service sector, and will be strongly outward oriented such that the city economy operates on a global scale."
The founding principles of the centre are to improve processes, promote investment, support transformation, encourage innovation, and build capacity and skills. "Fujitsu Siemens Computers is committed to ensuring the success of this initiative and we believe that through our contribution, we will be able to facilitate continued development in Software Engineering," says Mark Wilson, Managing Director of Fujitsu Siemens Computers.
"South Africa has proved to be a valuable supplier and generator of intellectual property and under the academic guidance of such a respectable institution as Wits University, I am confident we will see some invaluable innovations emerging from the JCSE."
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has an undertaking to supply the JCSE with IT hardware for use in its software development programmes.
