Fujitsu wins Wall Street Journal`s Innovation Award

Johannesburg, 27 Oct 2005

Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced that its palm vein authentication technology has won The Wall Street Journal`s Innovation Award, for security in networks.

Fujitsu`s palm vein authentication technology is a biometric technology that recognises the unique vein pattern of a person`s palm, as a highly secure means of personal identification. This technology is extremely difficult to forge compared to other methods of biometric security, since palm vein patterns are internal to the body.

Fujitsu`s palm vein authentication technology is also hygienic, as the scanning is contactless, thereby requiring no direct surface contact with the scanning device even when used in public applications. Fujitsu has commercialised this technology, which thus far has been implemented in bank ATMs, for room entry access in hospitals and residential condominiums, and for access to personal records and transcripts at academic institutions.

According to The Wall Street Journal, of the 750 entries received from companies worldwide, competition was steepest in the category of security for networks, which received the most entries, thereby representing concerns in society today for reliable security that is difficult to breach.

Key criteria for which entries were judged by included whether the innovation represented a breakthrough from conventional ideas or methods in its field, and whether the innovation goes beyond incremental improvements on technologies that already exist.

Shigeru Sasaki, General Manager and head of the Research Centre for Image Processing and Biometric Technologies of Fujitsu Laboratories Limited, comments: "Fujitsu is honoured that our palm vein authentication technology has won this prestigious award, particularly in the entry category with the fiercest competition. As networking and convenience in IT continue to grow, Fujitsu sees a greater need for higher security measures to enable a safer society. We will continue to further develop this technology to offer leading-edge biometric security solutions to our customers worldwide."
