Ganymede Software, a leader in end-to-end performance management, and Network Communications Management (NCM), independent performance management specialists and Ganymede resellers in southern Africa, have announced the availability of Pegasus 2.2 that will give IT managers unprecedented flexibility in monitoring network application performance.
"Pegasus is a performance monitor that keeps constant watch on whether existing applications are performing well. Pegasus proactively alerts IT managers if performance falls below acceptable levels and identifies the likely cause of the problem," said Grenville Payne, managing director, NCM.
The new version introduces a revolutionary licensing scheme that will give IT managers the freedom to use a single performance monitoring product that both views actual user traffic and generates repeatable synthetic transactions. With this universal licensing scheme, customers can designate Performance Endpoints to operate in application monitoring mode, network monitoring mode, or in both modes simultaneously. These Performance Endpoints are installed on a workstation or server and send performance information to Pegasus.
In application monitoring mode, the endpoint passively watches user traffic generated by a workstation. It measures application response time, throughput and availability, accounting for all contributors to application performance: the client, the server and the network. In network monitoring mode, the endpoint actively generates synthetic traffic that looks like real user traffic and measures response time, throughput and availability.
Network monitoring isolates the performance of the network and determines whether or not the network is responsible for causing poor application performance. By combining application and network monitoring, the IT staff can quickly find the root cause of a performance problem.
Pegasus provides a consolidated view of information gathered from all endpoints. Furthermore, a single endpoint deployed on a workstation can operate in either or both active network monitoring mode and passive application monitoring mode. Pegasus is the only performance monitoring product that uses the same endpoint agent for application and network monitoring, thus saving IT managers time and the inconvenience of installing multiple endpoints on a workstation for monitoring purposes.
A further enhancement to Pegasus 2.2 is the fact that it shows at a glance how many users are being impacted by a performance problem. It now prioritises performance problems in three ways:
by percentage of deviation from normal response time and throughput thresholds;
by which performance problems are escalating most quickly;
by the number of users being affected.
With the addition of this new perspective, IT managers are able to align their decisions with the priorities of the business. For example, they can focus their troubleshooting efforts on problems affecting the most users working with business-critical applications.
Another feature of Pegasus 2.2 is the time saving auto-update of endpoints, so that IT managers never have to manually update endpoint code. Endpoints installed on clients and servers will automatically contact the Pegasus server to determine whether newer endpoint code is available and, if so, automatically update themselves.
"As these network monitoring and performance management tools become more sophisticated, we are able to offer our client better service and better network performance management," said Payne.
