Ganymede`s new Pegasus Software is the first line of defence for application performance problems

IT departments can greatly reduce the impact of performance problems on worker productivity
Johannesburg, 20 Oct 1999

Ganymede Software, an innovator in end-to-end performance management, has announced that its Pegasus 2.1 software enables IT managers to greatly reduce the amount of time and resources they spend dealing with performance problems. Using a technique called enterprise performance triage, Pegasus identifies, prioritises, isolates and diagnoses and application performance problems to select the best treatment. In this way, Pegasus greatly reduces the amount of time it takes IT departments to resolve performance problems.

Network Communications Management (NCM), independent performance management specialists, is the local reseller for Ganymede Software.

The performance of email, corporate database, ERP and e-commerce applications has a major impact on the bottom line. Companies realise that when a network or application is down, the problems needs to be resolved quickly. But, the cost of networked application brownouts (slow application performance) can be higher than the cost of network downtime. Surveys have indicated that companies are losing up to R21 000 per employee per year in lost productivity because of application brownouts.

Enterprise performance triage

Historically, when end users call to complain about slow application performance, a chain reaction begins. Several different IT employees simultaneously conduct a number of troubleshooting activities until someone happens to identify the cause of the problem. In contrast, Pegasus can triage application performance problems, preventing multiple experts from getting involved in addressing the same issues, and significantly reducing the amount of time it takes to resolve performance problems.

Pegasus software

.         proactively alters the IT department to performance problems before users begin complaining;

.         automatically prioritises performance problems based on a severity index that reflects the number of users being affected by a problem and the persistence of that problem. Pegasus also indicates which performance problems are improving and which are deteriorating:

.         quickly identifies whether a problem is being caused by the network, an application or a server.

In this way, second-level network, server, or application experts become involved only when necessary. In addition, Pegasus provides information about the probable cause so that performance problems can be resolved much more quickly. Faster problem resolution means less employee productivity lost due to application brownouts.

"Ganymede has applied the same model to performance problems as that used in rooms, which rely on triage to quickly determine the best course of action. Triage prevents the hospital from wasting valuable time and avoids getting specialists involved unnecessarily," said Grenville Payne, managing director, NCM.

"Pegasus software automatically determines the best course of action for handling slow application performance, thereby leading to faster, more efficient problem resolution."

Pegasus consists of two products: the Pegasus Network Monitor and the Pegasus Application Monitor. The former measures end-to-end performance by emulating application traffic on a scheduled basis. This perspective isolates the performance of the network from client, server and application performance. The only way to understand whether the network is responsible for causing slow application response time is to isolate network performance from all other possible contributing factors . For example, the amount of time it takes an application to access disk files or the possibility that too many users are simultaneously trying to access a server.

The Pegasus Application Monitor measures end-to-end application performance over time by monitoring the response time and throughput of application traffic being created by users. This perspective enables IT departments to understand the end-user`s view of application performance. The Application Monitor also includes a component that provides key server information to pinpoint whether a problem is being caused by a server. The combination of views afforded by the Network Monitor and the Application Monitor enables Pegasus to understand all of the components involved in affecting application performance.

Ganymede Software was the first company to introduce a solution for enterprise performance management which enables IT departments to deliver reliable, predictable application performance.

NCM was established in 1995 and specialises in professional services relating to active and passive application and network performance management solutions. Independent of all network infrastructure vendors, NCM uses and distributes the full range of Sniffer products from Network Associates as well as Ganymede Software, Optimal Networks and INS, which all offer application and network performance monitoring solutions. NCM assesses its customers` networks and implements the best solution or combination of solutions for the specific corporation from the development phase, through the piloting of the network project up to managing and monitoring live applications and networks on an ongoing basis.

NCM`s Managed Network Services offering takes performance problems off your "To Do" list and gives them back to you "Done".
