Garmin has redesigned its free online fitness community, Garmin Connect.

The updates include improved site navigation and a customisable widget-style dashboard, which means users can choose what information they want to see. This is coupled with enhanced reports, allowing athletes to track their performance over time, and free training plans that can be sent straight to compatible Garmin devices.

"Whether users are just starting out, or training to win an elite race, the new Garmin Connect can be personally customised to meet their needs," said Marc Bainbridge, Fitness and Outdoor Category manager for Garmin Southern Africa.

The platform also offers a segments and leader boards feature, which enables athletes to compare their current performance with their past efforts or to see how they measure up against the competition.

"With more than four billion miles already uploaded by users, the new Garmin Connect will continue to support users' active lifestyles and inspire them to achieve their goals, whether they are focused on one sport of if they participate in a variety of activities," adds Bainbridge.

The new reporting function analyses training progress, while providing users with free training plans to assist athletes in their preparation for anything from a 5km race to an ultra-marathon.

The new version Garmin Connect is more social, as users can connect with friends and share their progress on social media platforms, according to Garmin.

Compatible Garmin golf devices are now supported on Garmin Connect, and owners of the Approach series of golf devices can share and analyse their scorecards and course while their shot distance and number of putts, among other things.

Garmin Connect will be rolled out in phases during the first quarter of 2014. The Garmin Connect mobile app will also be updated to reflect the changes.
