Garmin Distribution Africa has partnered with Navteq in a move that aims to provide enhanced content for its range of Nuvi devices locally.
Dawn Ramsay, GM for Garmin Europe, says Garmin has utilised Navteq maps and content for the majority of the countries it served over the past 10 years. The agreement has led to world firsts, such as individual lane guidance and improved junction views, and helping customers navigate with accuracy and ease, she notes.
“The integration of the Navteq map for SA will continue to make sure that our consumers receive the best navigational experience available on the market today,” she adds.
Garmin introduced the Masterpiece (3790LT), which features a slim design, and according to the company, at 8.7mm, is the thinnest personal navigation device on the market.
The device comes with ASR, customisable wake-up command, pinch and tap zooming functionality on the multi-touch capacitive touch-screen and displays maps in 3D for terrain, buildings and landmarks (available in selected urban areas). Other features include myTrends, lifetime subscription to live traffic and Bluetooth.
Other products announced from Garmin were the 2xxx series: Nuvi 2200, 2300, 2360LT and 2460LT as well as the 37xxx range, which includes the 3760LT and 3790LT. All these personal navigation devices will come pre-loaded with Navteq mapping, which, according to the company, offers a better and stress-free in-car navigation experience.
The 23xx and 24xx series offer 'lane assist', which displays the correct lane the driver should be in and 'junction view', which displays generic road signs. The company believes these features make unfamiliar intersections easier to navigate.
Garmin's live traffic service called Premium Lifetime Traffic comes with a lifetime subscription on the following devices: Nuvi 2360LT, 2460LT, 3760LT and 3790LT.
Automatic speech recognition lets the driver control the device by voice and works on the Nuvi 2360LT, 2460LT and 3790LT.
Pedestrian mode is supported in the Nuvi 2360LT, 3760LT and 3790LT lets the user flip from landscape to portrait, for a more detailed view.
The new range of Garmin products will be available at selected Garmin retailers from April onwards.
