New Windows features showcased

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates yesterday demonstrated new security features in the Windows operating system. Reuters reports that Gates says the company is making progress in its battle against computer worms and viruses.

The company demonstrated the enhanced security features of an interim release of Service Pack 2 for its Windows XP operating system.

The update has a pop-up window blocker built in to Explorer and a stronger firewall.

Net phone services must provide 911

USA Today reports that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ruled that US Internet phone services must provide the 911 service to their subscribers.

"We need to address the interest of public safety in the new systems," says Michael Powell, chairman of the FCC.

However, Powell stopped short of saying his agency would require voice over Internet protocol services to supply 911.

Joystick alternatives coming soon

Game developers and researchers are working on offering gamers alternatives to the joystick with products that listen to voice and watch for movement.

Associated Press reports that the hope is to lure people into playing games.

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories` Advanced Concepts Group recently began using games to gauge reaction to stress, boredom and other psychological situations.

Sandia officials believe their analysis will show a correlation between the physical feedback and a person`s feelings.
