An e-government portal has been launched to improve efficiency and allow the public access to provincial government information and services.

The portal, launched in Tembisa by Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will give members of the public access to e-government information and services.

Gauteng Online will also provide a single entry point to provincial government Web sites.

"The first phase of the portal includes a variety of access points using ICT to access government information," says Gauteng`s chief director of communication and information, Annette Griessel.

"There are four major aspects to this new portal, and that is government to citizens, government to business, government to employees, and government to government," says Griessel.

"We acknowledge the fact that a lot of people especially those living in the townships, do not have access to the , but they can take advantage of MPCCs (multipurpose community centres) and telecentres placed at their nearest communities," says Griesel.

She admits that only seven of the 18 MPCCs in Gauteng have Internet connectivity at this stage.

"We realise that a small number of these MPCCs have access to the Internet, and as part of the provincial government`s future plans, connectivity will be rolled out to the rest of the centres," says Griessel.

She adds: "Through the Gauteng Online initiative, Internet access has been rolled out to about 1 000 public schools across the province.

Griessel says those who can`t access the Internet should make use of the (011) 376-7070 call centre number to access local government information.
