The Gauteng provincial government will set up a unit to monitor and control any occurrences during the 2010 Soccer World Cup later this year.

Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane says the central command unit will be a joint effort between the departments of sports, arts, culture and recreation; roads and public transport; economic development; health and social development; as well as local government and housing.

Mokonyane says the unit will handle critical issues, such as management, services, health services, food supplies, , traffic management, public safety and entertainment.

While not revealing what the total budget for the unit would be, she added that each department had already set aside funding and no additional funds would have to be sourced.

While Mokonyane previously raised concerns on financial mismanagement by several government departments, she stressed that any funding pressures resulting from accruals and under-collection of revenue would not affect planning for the major soccer tournament.

The unit will implement systems to connect to the central disaster management centre (DMC) and electronic traffic management systems. It will provide information to the province's Crime Management Centre to co-ordinate and analyse all available information on crime incidents.

The DMC will link to all nine provinces and provide real-time monitoring, collating and reporting of any incidents. The centre, which will be managed by the National Disaster Management Centre, will host ICT systems that will include online monitoring systems for all official venues and also provide radio linkages.

“The strategy will allow us to unify various components and levels within the province and collectively work towards a core objective,” says Mokonyane.
