Generic Gateway protection for Outlook hostile exploits

content and company, Aladdin Knowledge Systems, has announced its eSafe Gateway Internet security solution is now providing protection against Microsoft Outlook`s recently detected hostile exploit.

"Although a Microsoft patch has been issued to solve the security breach, the solution is limited to the desktop. Due to time constraints and the complexity of providing a patch for each desktop in a network environment, eSafe Gateway provides a simple, yet effective proactive solution," says Brett Myroff, CEO of local Aladdin affiliate, eSafe Technologies SA.

"The new HeaderVerify technology in GateWay 2.1 generically prevents the potential exploitation of the Outlook security bugs. Yet again, eSafe is providing proactive protection from the emerging threats without the need for laborious updating of workstations with MS patches or virus tables," he says.

"The gateway solution gives large networks the ability to effectively implement a solution in a timely fashion, when time is of the essence. Being able to block hostile exploits at the gateway provides excellent coverage for this type of breach. Aladdin is to be commended for taking the next step by providing this solution," says Peter Tippett, Chief Technologist, ICSA.net.

As part of new HeaderVerify technology, eSafe Gateway blocks any malicious e-mail that attempts to use such an exploit. Expecting network administrators to deploy large-scale upgrades and patches to each PC is neither timely nor efficient. Instead, eSafe halts the malicious e-mail at the gateway level, thus preventing the exploit from being used by a hacker, who would attempt to send an e-mail with a corrupt header. Causing a buffer overrun, the corrupt header could initiate a Denial of Service (DoS) attack or even run arbitrary code that can result in trojans, viruses and the like.

"This exploit is not a virus, nor can the proper protection be gained through conventional virus-preventing methods," says Myroff. "The new HeaderVerify system is designed to prevent spam, spoof, relay and other e-mail exploits, enabling eSafe`s Gateway to provide quick and effective protection which is just as up-to-date as the threat itself."
