Get to grips with the basics of data warehousing

Johannesburg, 12 Jun 2003

Sybase SA is offering a one-day training course in data warehousing targeted at those who have no prior experience in this space.

The course is aimed at business users, sponsors, non-technical project managers and anyone new to data warehousing. It is also valuable for those seeking an understanding of what is involved in managing a data warehouse project.

Arn'el Taute, training sales consultant at Sybase SA, says the course addresses such questions as "What is a data warehouse?"; "Do we need one?"; What's so great about it?; "How does it affect my business, my department, and my job?".

"The course will help those who attend understand the basics of data warehousing and the benefits it has to offer, and it will also examine the impact that data warehousing can have on their jobs," she says.

Topics covered include:

* How does a data warehouse integrate with other sources of information already in use?

* Architecture overview - how a data warehouse is built.

* Job functions and skills needed to develop a data warehouse.

* Challenges, success and risk factors of data warehousing.

* Glossary of terms around data warehousing.

The course provides a functional understanding of data warehouse basics, as well as focusing on project management, architecture, critical success factors, risk factors, design, processes and tools.

"The course describes, at a high level, how to build a data warehouse. It will show the various roles and responsibilities, as well as the associated skills that are needed. We'll also talk about the best practices for getting the right deliverables for your users," says Taute.

It also explains how a business intelligence system can use a data warehouse to deliver competitive advantage in the marketplace. The course addresses new trends in data warehousing and the influence data warehousing has on business intelligence and customer relationship management.

Drawing from real-world experience, the aim of the course is to provide recommendations for getting started, including how to make sure that objectives and needs are met. It provides an overview of the process that IT will go through on the data warehouse project so business users will know what to expect.

"Those who attend the course will leave familiar with the concepts, terminology, and processes pertaining to data warehousing and business intelligence," says Taute.
