During a recent joint PQ Networks/Cisco briefing in Midrand, Tim Knowles, MD of PQ Networks, explained why securing information assets within the Internet age is vital.
According to Knowles, there are five key elements that help to form a cohesive and complete network security solution. These are identity, perimeter security, data privacy, security monitoring and policy management.
In terms of network evolution, Knowles said we come from a background of tight networks, online and internal finance systems and then enterprise resource planning systems run by IT departments.
This has taken a dramatic turn and in the Internet age, said Knowles, businesses have to reinvent themselves to adapt to changing methods of operating.
The Internet age, he noted, encompasses more than just setting up a Web site or e-commerce facility, it is a review of every part of the business with emphasis on supply chain integration and management.
There is also the need for more open communication between businesses and an allowance for new and improved co-operation between trading communities. This requires a cohesive and holistic approach to network security, he added.
The overall goal of business, believes Knowles, should be to have intelligent self-defending networks that incorporate intrusion detection, comprehensive network security and a systems approach to operations.
The briefing also included a discussion on various forms of online security breaches like hacking, cracking, Web site defacing and fraud.
As a Cisco Gold partner, PQ Networks also explained what products it offers as part of its cohesive network security solution.
