Gifts to keep execs at home this Christmas

Johannesburg, 26 Nov 2001

This Christmas, South African executives are likely watch the cricket test between Australia and SA on a 4x3 metre screen - in their living rooms.

That`s not because they found a R60 000 big screen TV in their stocking, but a portable projector which retails from under R20 000.

"Portable projectors are now within reach of many households, costing less than big screen TV alternatives," says Brian Bogaard, GM, Acer in South Africa.

The new range of Acer PalmPro portable projectors plug into a standard DSTV, M-Net box, DVD Player, VCR or PC, creating instant big-screen viewing.

No need to go to the pub for the next rugby game and watch a blurry picture from a distance. Nor do you need a dark room - just a normal TV environment.

Weighing in from under 1.4kg, the new projectors are smaller than a DVD player, and can easily be stored when not in use.

"Projectors have become lighter and brighter with unprecedented picture quality - thanks to DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology and a brightness in excess of 1000 ANSI Lumens," explains Bogaard, who says it also comes with an ultra-thin card-type remote control for lazy viewers.

And because the projector can be used for business presentations as well as home use, it pays for itself over a period of time.

Another stocking filler for the family is a wireless LAN for the home.

Unsightly Ethernet cables running through your multimillion-rand home is visually unappealing and can be hazardous.

The new wireless home LAN connects all PCs and shared equipment such as modems, printers, scanners and CD-writers in your home.

"Multiplying each of these items by the number of PCs in your home to create a complete stand-alone solution doesn`t make financial sense. The savings that can be generated by sharing hardware and software on a wireless LAN far outweigh what would have been spent on duplicating the equipment," Bogaard concludes.
