Up to 20 000 visitors got a look at the future of mobile technology in SA this weekend, at the Vodacom Techno Expo 2004 at Vodaworld in Midrand.

Around 30 exhibitors at the event displayed the latest cellphones, applications and accessories, giving the public a practical demonstration on what to expect from third-generation (3G) technology. Among other presentations, Vodacom showed how it is possible to view CNN, Sky News and BBC World, as well as make video calls, on a 3G cellphone.

"I think the general reaction is one of surprise," he said. "People are amazed at the capabilities of the new 3G handsets."

Another aim of the expo was to celebrate the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) - a cellular technology used in SA and more than 110 other countries.

"No other mobile technology has proved as versatile and allowed for the development of so many applications as GSM," said Mthobi Tyamzashe, group executive of Vodacom Group corporate affairs.

The expo also attracted a range of local celebrities and the Sony Ericsson robotic dog, Robi One Kenobi.
