Global Technology (Glotec), the JSE Securities Exchange-listed banking solutions provider, is set to cut the testing time for its customised Globus banking products by 66% as it rolls out the Rational suite of automated products, supplied exclusively in SA by Software Futures, a member of the MGX Holdings group.
"Before we started using the Rational product testing range, each addition to any of the Globus products would have to be tested manually," says Sandy Lavis, quality assurance manager at Glotec. "Once the entire Rational suite is in place, automating the process, we will see a cut in testing time to a third of the manual process."
Glotec has bought five Rational Team Test Windows Floating licences, one Rational Suite Team-Unifying Platform Windows Floating licence, and one Rational Test 5 Pooled Virtual Tester Pack from Software Futures.
The Globus banking suite, developed by Swiss Stock Exchange-listed Temenos in which Glotec has a 20% share, offers a turnkey electronic banking infrastructure, and has been deployed worldwide. It is widely regarded as the world's leading integrated banking solutions suite.
"The Team Test licences enable Glotec's quality assurance team to test their Globus banking systems from a functionality point of view," says Trevor van Rensburg, business unit manager: best practices at Software Futures. "This ensures that whatever new extensions they have added to it will work and not disable any other feature."
The Team Unifying Platform enables the quality assurance team to integrate with its analysts and developers who also use the software, providing a common set of tools for the entire team, producing common documents and a common configuration.
"The automated testing tool works like a video recording," says Van Rensburg. "In a manual test, developers would have to run through the entire program and each time they made a change, they would have to start from the beginning, producing no final record of what they had done."
"The saving in testing time comes about directly as a result of Rational producing the script on which everything is tracked," Lavis adds. "Instead of having to run the whole program again from scratch, we just run the script and any errors or conflicts are immediately highlighted."
Rational Team Test produces a scripted record of the entire process, including all changes and when put through the testing phase, it will point out all incompatibilities, overwrites or errors in a log viewer. The developer then has the choice to accept or reject suggested changes, depending on the actual demand of the customisation in question.
Currently Glotec is running a pilot program, with support being provided by Software Futures as part of the contract.
