GNAT Box - the next generation in powerful yet cost-effective firewalls

Johannesburg, 23 Aug 2000

breaches can be devastating to a company`s systems and workflow but need not be to the company`s budget. "The GNAT Box System is the most cost-effective firewall on the market today," says Royden Dall, Product Manager for Intekom.

"Its low price, unlimited user licence and minimal hardware requirements make it a clear winner." Intekom was recently appointed a principal partner for GNAT Box in southern Africa.

GNAT Box is a powerful next generation firewall - a complete solution that is simple to install, configure and operate. The entire runtime system is contained on, and boots off, a single floppy disk with administration being performed via the Web.

The GNAT Box system is part of the Intekom range of security bundled solutions designed to meet the Internet needs of developing businesses and help them compete with the corporate sector.

Your hardware nightmares disappear with the ICSA-certified GNAT Box system because there are minimal hardware requirements. Installation and configuration happen within minutes and, with no hard disk, there are no disk crashes and thus no need for backups. PPP configurations eliminate the need for a router except for digital connections.

It is a completely self-contained stateful inspection firewall operating system, and does not require a general purpose OS such as UNIX or NT on which to run. The firewall software is contained in flash memory from which the GB-100 appliance boots and runs.

The default security policy is to disallow all unsolicited inbound connections from the external network whilst allowing external access to all hosts on the protected network. Defining new filters is made easier with easy reference by name to specific network resources, hosts, subnets etc.

Actions include raising alarms, sending emails, pinging a host, pager alerts, SNMP traps and shutting down the interface. NAT is supported, as is a pure `pass through` mode, and aliases may be applied to external interfaces and then `tunneled` through to specific hosts such as web or ftp servers.

"A new feature is the check box that enables or disables a filter. This allows rules to be defined then removed temporarily for special cases or testing, providing the means to configure a number of firewalls centrally, " explains Dall.

Other features include Gigabit Ethernet support, Token-ring support, improved email proxy with anti-spam facilities, IP spoofing protection, mail abuse prevention system (MAPS) update, full support for any IP protocol (non-NAT mode only), optional multi-interface feature, and activation codes for features and registration.

The GNAT Box system also supports non-standard applications, like RealAudio-Viseo, Vxtreme, Vosaic, VDOLIve, StreamWorks and Net2Phone.

"With the low human resource costs and the seamless integration with Windows, MacIntosh, NT and Unix," says Dall, " this is a products that spells top grade security and convenience at the same time."
