Gold Circle installs DigiPos units at off-course outlets

Johannesburg, 13 Mar 2003

Following last year`s R2.2 million contract to supply Gold Circle, the KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province Racing Associations with 50 Epson Intelligent Register (IR) integrated touch-screen point-of-sale (POS) terminals and 50 betting card readers, PC-PoS South Africa has won a follow-on deal to supply 30 of its DigiPos point of sale units. The contract is valued at R800 000.

The DigiPos units will be used by Gold Circle for punters to take bets at off-course outlets, thereby enabling the association to provide a higher level of service to its clients.

The DigiPos Millennium units were supplied in time for the recent J&B Met, one of the highlights of the horse racing calendar.

Twenty-five units are being used by Gold Circle in Cape Town, while five were deployed in Durban.

The DigiPos Millennium system - launched in SA last year - is an Intel-based machine with a unique jet stream cooling system designed to keep the POS terminal running at a much lower temperature.

Regan Atkins, business development manager at PC-PoS, said: "PC-PoS is able to guarantee that the DigiPos bios and motherboard revision remains stable and unchanged for period of up to 24 months, unlike mainstream PC vendors who cannot control standard PC production and have no choice but to supply technology that changes as much as 10 times per year. The costs attached to this changing technology can be significant to a national organisation due to the huge potential impact of resulting software compatibility and support issues, especially in the more remote parts of southern Africa."

More than 50 000 DigiPos units have been installed globally.
