In the quest to achieve greater application performance and system reliability, IBM has launched the next-generation IntelliStation M Pro workstations, available from Tarsus Technologies, the value-add distribution arm of JSE-listed MB Technologies.
"The workstations feature speedier Intel processors and chipset, 2D and 3D graphics choices, and all the value-adds expected from IBM," says Ross Matthee IBM general manager at Tarsus Technologies.
These workstations are powered by advanced Intel Pentium 4 (6229) and dual-capable Intel Xeon processors (6850). At 2.4GHz, the products feature scalable, rack-mountable tower designs that offer several slots and bays. There is also a catalogue of high-throughput fixed and removable storage choices, and feature-packed 2D and 3D graphic solutions from ATI, Matrox, NVIDIA and 3Dlabs.
In addition, Microsoft Windows XP Professional is preloaded and Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT and major Linux distributors are also certified. "With Intel publicly projecting processor speeds to reach 3.0GHz by year`s end, the underlying system architecture has been revamped to minimise data bottlenecks," continues Matthee.
The new 850E chipset introduced on the IntelliStation M Pro 6229 features a 533MHz quad-pumped system bus (4 x 133MHz) and support for up to 2GB RDRAM. Combined with the faster 2.4GHz Pentium 4 processor, the new chipset is designed to provide a significant improvement in application performance as well as general system responsiveness.
As always, IBM has worked closely with leading graphics vendors to optimise and certify top 2D and 3D graphics solutions. The popular Matrox G450 DVI with 32MB memory or NVIDIA`s Quadro4 200 NVS with 64MB memory offer crisp, snap-to-attention 2D display. The NVIDIA Quadro4 900 XGL is the newest addition to the IntelliStation inventory of extreme 3D graphics accelerators.
With 128MB of DDR unified memory and a long list of high-end features - among them full-scene anti-aliasing, overlay planes, two-sided lighting and occlusion culling - NVIDIA looks to have a winner in this highly competitive market. Other available dual-display 3D adapters include the ATI FireGL 8800 with128MB memory for advanced 3D on a budget, and 3Dlabs` Wildcat III 6110 (select models) for no-compromise 3D solid modelling.
