Google, Optus in SME partnership

Smart Company.

But while the move is somewhat expected given the recent trend towards -as-a-, one telco expert says Optus could be adopting this new programme as a defence mechanism.

Telsyte research director Foad Fadaghi says telcos such as Optus are concerned that Google is growing at such a fast rate with its business services that it could actually end up challenging them.

According to Computerworld, the commercial terms and conditions of the agreement are confidential but the products are expected to be available by the second quarter of 2011.

“Our aim is to provide SMEs with an integrated suite of -based business tools that enables them to connect, manage and promote their business more cost effectively,” Optus small and medium-sized business MD, Rohan Ganeson, says.

The Wall Street Journal reveals that the deal sends a clear challenge to Telstra, which two years ago signed an exclusive deal with Microsoft to offer cloud computing services to its business customers through its so-called T-Suite platform.

Cloud computing allows consumers and businesses to lease services and infrastructure on demand from major telco players.

The model has grown in popularity among businesses as it allows them to consume computing capacity and services delivered over corporate networks much as they would electricity or gas.
